Our goal at Origina has always been a simple one, to leave the world in a better place than when we were founded. That path to a better world has led us to our passion for sustainability as an integral piece of our mission. As Origina CEO and Founder, Tomás O’Leary, puts it “Sustainability is not a side initiative at Origina. It is foundational to who we are and what we do. Our mission enables customers to extend the life of their IT assets, and in doing so, reduce their electronic waste and their carbon footprint. We know that to lead on sustainability externally, we must also live those values internally.”
In essence, it’s about more than just business, creating a better environment in the world of software is the lifeblood of what we do and why we do it. As part of that continued commitment to a better software world for all, we’re delighted to have published our first ever sustainability report.
Sustainability is an increasing concern across the modern landscape of software support. As we looked at in our previous sustainability blog, according to TechHQ, the United Nations (UN) reports a record 61.3 million metric tons of e-waste was generated worldwide in 2023. While another major UN study predicts that global e-waste will become the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream by 2030. Perhaps most concerningly, much of this waste is completely avoidable.
A lot of hardware waste is actually a by-product of poor software practices, usually at the hands of the OEM vendors. The current cycle of needless upgrades that many OEM vendors force upon their users means a higher turnover of hardware- it’s a practice that is plaguing the industry. Origina aims to reduce e-waste by extending the life of IT assets through independent software maintenance and challenging planned obsolescence in the tech industry.
As outlined in the report, over the years we’ve introduced several initiatives to help move the needle in regard to creating a more sustainable tech industry for everyone. One of these steps included setting up our Regen Team, a cross-functional group driving sustainability strategy, policy development, and board-level recommendations. This, among other things, has helped us to achieve a bronze EcoVadis rating so far- a feat we’re immensely proud of but one we know we can continue to push higher.
Externally as well, Origina continues to lead by example by advocating for and remaining actively involved with several causes close to our hearts. The Right to Repair, for example, has remained a cornerstone of Origina’s belief system since the companies inception. According to the European Commission, Consumers lose an estimated €12 billion annually by replacing goods rather than repairing them and this is another needless loss of revenue and source of e-waste that Origina is determined to eradicate. Through our involvement with organizations like Free ICT Europe & US and iMasons Climate Accord, Origina’s leadership actively promotes open access to software support and longer equipment lifespans and participation in global efforts to decarbonize digital infrastructure.
Origina also continues to embody our beliefs through our community engagement programs such as Reforest Nation, through which we have committed to a partnership to plant 5,000 native trees in 2025. Our sponsorship of Solas Project, support for youth empowerment and education, and our Volunteer Day Benefit, where Employees receive paid time off to volunteer, are just another couple of ways we’re working to try make the world a better place.
To Origina, sustainability is key- this is not a side initiative, we embed sustainability into every fibre of our business model and culture. As a company we are sustainability savvy and carbon conscious, Origina is proactively measuring and planning to continue to reduce our footprint, despite already being a low-emissions business. We believe that advocacy drives change, that industry-level engagement with organizations like Free ICT and ICA can, and will, amplify impact beyond company boundaries.
It’s more than just about business, we truly believe that the software world can be a better, more sustainable place and we will continue to push where we can to help make that happen. As a company, we believe in holding ourselves accountable when it comes to ushering in change. Although there is much left to do, our 2025 sustainability report is another step on that journey.
