A large U.S.-based healthtech company found itself at a critical crossroads when VMware announced the end-of-life (EOL) for its NSX-V platform. The company’s infrastructure, spanning more than 130 virtual machines across two data centers, had been built on this legacy technology. With vendor support no longer available, the business was exposed to increased risk—running mission-critical payment systems on unsupported software meant that vulnerabilities could no longer be patched, scalability was limited, and compliance obligations became harder to meet.
The stakes could not have been higher. The company provides payment services that underpin the operations of medical practices and healthcare networks nationwide. Even a momentary outage could interrupt reimbursement cycles, delay provider payments, and ultimately affect patient care. The migration required precise execution to preserve existing IP addresses, protect sensitive financial and healthcare data, and modernize security. Origina began with a comprehensive NSX-V assessment, mapping dependencies, network configurations, and policies to define migration waves that balanced risk and minimized disruption. To maintain IP continuity, Origina implemented NSX Layer 2 bridging technology between legacy and new environments. This ensured workloads retained their existing IPs throughout the migration, eliminating costly reconfiguration and reducing operational risk.
Security modernization was central to the strategy. Origina supported the deployment of FortiGate Next Generation Firewalls to replace legacy NSX-V edge firewalling, enhancing ingress and egress controls with intrusion prevention, application awareness, and segmentation. Logical isolation between workload clusters and the DMZ reduced the attack surface and supported compliance with healthcare regulations.
At the same time, Origina rearchitected the customer’s load balancing strategy with NSX Advanced Load Balancer features such as dynamic scaling, SSL offloading, and real-time analytics. Workloads were then migrated in carefully planned waves using VMware vMotion and HCX, with each stage tested to validate performance, resiliency, and compliance.
Throughout the engagement, Origina worked hand-in-hand with the customer’s IT leadership, aligning migration windows with change-control processes and ensuring every step was transparent, approved, and executed with minimal business risk.
