What is the Cyber Essentials Plus Certification?

Cyber Essentials is a U.K. government-backed, industry supported certification that assists your organization in keeping your, and your customers’, data safe and secure from cyber-attacks. Cyber Essentials Plus is the advanced version of the cybersecurity certificate. It builds on the Cyber Essentials scheme by introducing an independent technical audit to verify effective implementation of core protections against common cyber-attacks, offering higher assurance for clients and proving resilience through testing of firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection, and patch management.

Achieving a Cyber Essentials certification requires a verified self-assessment.  To achieve a Cyber Essentials Plus certificate, you must also undergo an external verification from an assessor that comes in to perform their own assessment of your organizations systems, such as devices, servers, gateways etc. Essentially, the Cyber Essentials Plus requires a more rigorous, externally verified investigation into the true strength of a company’s commitment to cybersecurity.

What Purpose Does This Certification Serve?

The Cyber Essentials certification is a clear demonstration of our commitment to cybersecurity strategies that prioritise vital security protocols and processes that help protect against cyber threats. Cyber Essentials focuses on 5 pillars of technical controls to help verify that organizations have the right security processes in place:

2. Boundary Firewalls and Internet Gateways
3. Malware Protection

5. Secure Configuration

The Cyber Essentials Plus certificate adds to this by offering an even higher level of assurance to a company’s commitment to cybersecurity. Accredited auditors undertake hands on testing and system audits to establish whether effective controls are in place, including vulnerability scans, malware protection checks, and account separation. The audit tests:

• Software Vulnerability Management:  All high-risk vulnerabilities are mitigated via an effective control within 14 days.
• Malware Protection: Test malware defences via email/web tests.
• Account Separation: Verifies users can’t run admin functions on standard accounts.
• Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Checks for MFA on cloud services.

The Cyber Essentials Plus certificate takes the basic certificate a step further by demonstrating an organization’s advanced cyber resilience to help improve customer trust. The independent technical audit helps to assure customers that security processes truly work in practice. The willingness to undergo much more rigorous and lengthy testing is just further testament to Origina’s belief in security-first support.
