Airtricity choose Origina to implement Virtual Infrastructure

Introduction:

Airtricity was founded in 1999 and now employs over 360 people across its offices in Ireland, Scotland, England the United States and Canada. As an integrated utility, the company is both a generator and supplier of green electricity and currently supplies green electricity to over 35,000 commercial customers in Ireland.

Project Summary:

Faced with the onset of having to compete in an All-Island Single Electricity Market (SEM) Origina utilised VMware technologies to rapidly accelerate the deployment of Airtricity's test and development systems to ensure their ultimate goal of running them on a virtual infrastructure would also be capable of managing its operational workload into the future.

The Challenges / Issues:

New IT infrastructures were required to enable Airtricity to run its operations and moreover prosper in the emerging new Single Electricity Market. A fundamental requirement was that all necessary test and development had to be completed within the strictest time frame.

The Solution:

The implementation of High Availability & Virtualised systems are two key areas of expertise for Origina. We established two fully operational ESX hosts running on virtual infrastructures for Airtricity that included more than twenty test and development systems.

Building upon the benefits of a rapidly evolving test & development infrastructure, Airtricity further replicated the benefits delivered from VMware Infrastructure 3 (including Vmotion, High Availability, Distributed Resource Scheduler) into a real-world production setting. This in turn allowed for a second host to be established in their environment that delivered a High Availability, dynamic resource scheduling VMware DRS system run on virtual machines.
