Quantum Acquires Pancetera Software, Gaining Key Technology and Expertise for Managing Data in Virtual Environments

Posted by: Origina

Combination of Pancetera's Technology and Quantum DXi(R) Disk Backup and Deduplication Appliances Provides More Efficient and Cost-Effective Data Protection

Quantum, an Origina partner and a leading global specialist in backup, recovery and Quantum acquires Pancetera Softwarearchive, has announced that it has acquired Pancetera Software Inc., a privately held company that has significantly reduced the complexity and cost of managing and protecting data in virtual server environments. The $12 million transaction consisted of $8.4 million in cash and $3.6 million in Quantum common stock (approximately 1.2 million shares), and is expected to be accretive to operating profit by the end of the current fiscal year. The acquisition extends Quantum's technology leadership by adding key assets for dramatically enhancing data management in virtual environments. Pancetera technology is already compatible with Quantum's DXi disk backup and deduplication products, and the company plans to further integrate the technology into its longer-term roadmaps for both DXi and its StorNext(R) high-performance file sharing and archive offerings.

"The Pancetera acquisition reflects Quantum's continued focus on expanding our storage systems portfolio to provide greater value to existing customers and also reach a broader customer base," said Jon Gacek, CEO of Quantum. "Together with our DXi deduplication and replication appliances, Pancetera's technology allows Quantum to offer higher performance, easier-to-use, and more cost-effective solutions for managing and protecting data in virtual environments. We also are excited about the addition of a very talented Pancetera team, which will help us accelerate our development of new and unique DXi and StorNext solutions for meeting customers' evolving needs in these environments."

Data Storage Challenges in Virtual Environments Server virtualization provides significant economic and flexibility benefits to customers, which is why it is a top IT spending priority. However, virtualization has created challenges in data storage, across both primary storage and backup (four out of five IT managers reported difficulties backing up virtualized environments in a survey Quantum conducted last year). Virtual machines (VMs) contain large amounts of redundant data, and most backup applications store this data many times over, consuming storage and server resources, extending backup windows and consuming network bandwidth. In addition, virtual server environments tend to be 24x7 operations, so allocating time and resources for backup and recovery is a key administrative challenge. Finally, IT departments struggle to find simple, cost-effective solutions for protecting remote sites and delivering disaster recovery across locations.

Evaluator Group Lab Report Gives Quantum's DXi6000 Deduplication Appliances High Marks for Features, Price-Performance

Quantum Logo

Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM), the leading global specialist in backup, recovery and archive and an Origina partner,  announced last month that industry analyst firm Evaluator Group validated the capabilities of Quantum's DXi6000 line of disk-based appliances. EGI's extensive testing showed that, in addition to meeting Quantum's published performance specifications, the DXi6700 VTL-optimized and DXi6500 NAS-optimized appliances excel in ease of use and provide best-in-class reporting tools. "With a unique combination of features, price and performance, the Quantum DXi6000 models are among the top products in a very strong field," said Russell Fellows, senior analyst, Evaluator Group. "In speaking with end users, we have found that disk-to-disk technology like the Quantum DXi(R) can greatly enhance backup and restore performance. However, what really makes the DXi6000 models stand out is the ease of use, combined with best-in-class reporting and unique tape integration capabilities. Many organizations still rely on tape for some data protection functions, and the DXi6000 is the only product in its category with tape integration capabilities to deliver efficient disk-to-tape movement when needed."

"In the last year, Quantum has refreshed the entire line of DXi products and recently announced our DXi 2.0 software platform, which will deliver the highest deduplication speeds available for any open protocol inline appliance in their respective classes, beginning with the DXi6500," said Rob Clark, senior vice president, Disk and Tape Backup Products, Quantum. "Evaluator Group not only validated the superior performance of the entire DXi6000 line, but subjected these products to the real world rigors end users are familiar with to test their full functionality and usability. I'm pleased to say the systems passed with flying colors."

Backup Hardware - SILVER AWARD:

Quantum Corp. DXi6500 Family (DXi6530, DXi6540 and DXi6550)

Quantum has been on a streak of adding and updating its disk backup product lines. The latest new products -- the DXi6500 family that includes the DXi6530, DXi6540 and DXi6550 models -- adds more choice for users looking for a network-attached storage (NAS) backup appliance that provides data deduplication along with simplicity and value for midrange environments."This is a major leap forward for Quantum on this product line," a judge said. "It has competitive performance with unique features."

Quantum's DXi6500 family has a maximum ingest rate of 2.5 TB per hour. The family scales from 8 TB to 56 TB of usable capacity. The DXi6540 and DXi6550 offer integrated tape creation, and the DXi6550 has high-speed 10 GbE connectivity. It's certified for direct tape creation through Symantec OST, with path-to-tape support available in DXi6500 models for long-term data retention and compliance.

With its deduplication engine and replication technology, the DXi6500 family reduces both the amount of disk required for backup and the bandwidth needed for replication, so it's ideal for use at remote sites. Advanced reporting features provide a detailed view of internal appliances and can gather data for trend analysis. All software features are bundled with each DXi6500 model and are included in the base price. VIEW ALL BACKUP HARDWARE WINNERS

  • How can I use DeDupe technology to deliver a faster RTO/RPO for my Disaster Recovery?
  • Why should I use deduplication?
  • How much money can I save employing DeDupe into my backup environment?
  • How are we out of disk space AGAIN?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this informative event is for you!

DeDupe is not just limited to backup environments, learn how you can use it for your VMware snaps, Database dumps etc.
