Huawei Symantec N8500 Clustered NAS Storage System Achieves Industry’s Highest SPECsfs2008 Benchmark Results

Huawei SymantecHuawei Symantec, a leading provider of network security and storage appliance solutions to enterprise customers worldwide, announced that its N8500 clustered NAS storage system achieved performance peaks in the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation’s (SPEC) SPECsfs2008 test, achieving the industry’s highest results with regard to NFS and CIFS benchmarks, clocking in at 636,036 and 712,664 Ops/Sec, respectively. This marks the second time that Huawei Symantec has achieved the industry’s best evaluation results, replicating the feat that it first achieved in 2009. SPEC is a non-profit organization that aims to produce, establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of performance benchmarks for computers and computer hardware. SPECsfs2008 is the core version of the SPEC benchmark that measures file server throughput and response time. It provides a standardized method for comparing performances across different vendor platforms. Eighteen major manufacturers of NAS file servers have released results based on the performance of their key products after being evaluated by this benchmark.

Huawei Symantec’s N8500 system is a key product in the N8000 series of scale-out NAS product, targeting the midrange and high-end NAS market. The N8000 series clustered NAS storage system architecture uses a Multi-node All Active Cluster technology with all engine nodes in the same cluster. This allows them to work concurrently on transaction processing and enables them to access single file at the same time. In addition, the N8500 system supports as many as 256 namespaces, and each of them is able to include 1 billion files at maximum. It also supports scalability up to 16 engine nodes, allowing for linear growth of system performance. The most recent SPEC evaluation and the resulting performance scores were achieved using 8 engine nodes, meaning that considerable potential has yet to be explored with regard to overall performance.

"The Huawei Symantec N8500 clustered storage system is a flagship product that boasts high reliability, scalability, and availability. We have continually developed this product so that it stays well ahead of the competition, and its performance in these benchmark results affirms the fact that the N8500 system is the best in its field," said Mr. Fan Ruiqi, Vice President of Huawei Symantec. "Compared to its main competitors, the N8500 system is able to achieve higher performance standards with lower construction and operation costs."

About SPECsfs2008 Benchmarks

SPECsfs2008 measures the throughput and response time of NFS and CIFS servers based on workloads that represent the activity of large-scale servers in real customer environments. Reflecting the capabilities index of software and hardware platforms, it is chosen as the authorized IT system index by the telecom, media, HPC and financial industries.

Competitive benchmark results stated above reflect results published on http://www.spec.org/ as of April 7, 2011.

NFS results are available at http://www.spec.org/sfs2008/results/sfs2008nfs.html CIFS results are available at http://www.spec.org/sfs2008/results/sfs2008cifs.html

Symantec and Huawei snatch storage benchmark crown

Huawei Symantec has blown EMC and its nearly all-flash VNX off the SPECsfs2008 benchmark throne with a clustered NAS system without using SSDs. Spinning rust rules, OK?...
